Broadview NOT Recommended for MFI (Home)

Broadview did not get on the OCDSB staff recommended list of Middle French Immersion Sites for either September 2008 OR September 2009. See the OCDSB’s latest MFI Report.

PLEASE COME TO THE BUSINESS SERVICES MEETING TONIGHT AT 7:00 AT THE SCHOOL BOARD

Please come to support Broadview in its bid for an immersion program Wednesday night at the Ottawa Carleton District School Board offices at 133 Greenbank Road (behind the high school).

Due to the possibility that a number of communities will be on hand, showing concern for their agenda issues, AND due to the nature of these long drawn out meetings, we are asking for a ‘different’ show of support.

When the first Broadview representative gets up to pose a question-this will happen around 7:10-WE ASK THAT YOU STAND UP WHILE THE QUESTION IS POSED. This way the trustees can see the support, and then, if you feel the need to leave (To perhaps show support for your Ottawa Senators) you can be confident that your attendance was noticed.
If you plan to stay for agenda item 6 (the MFI consultation report), at which time Jennifer McKenzie will try to amend the list to have Broadview included, bring a book.
GREAT! hope to see a huge crowd…pass this on.

Anne Donald

Broadview is not getting Middle French Immersion

  • despite the fact that Broadview meets so many of the Board’s own recommendations.
  • despite the fact that Broadview and Glashan represent approximately 25% of the LFI students in the entire OCDSB — no consideration was given to adding MFI to ANY SCHOOL in ANY DOWNTOWN or inner city area.
  • despite the fact that the MFI consultation process was supposed to be redistributing the French Immersion in areas of LFI phase out (Broadview).
  • The OCDSB has completely ignored the fact that 30% of students in the board attend FI….In the Broadview catchment area the number is well over 50%

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take the time to email the trustees this weekend

Tell them that our grade 3’s and 2’s must now switch schools mid stream, tell them we are losing LFI and the 120+ students enrolled yearly, tell them that Woodroffe and Elmdale have 14 portables to house French Immersion programs (because it is a program wanted in our community), tell them to consider school catchments that have a desire for the program and that even distribution all around the board isn’t necessarily where programs should be placed. Tell them you will not let Broadview close. Tell them everything.

The recommended future MFI sites will be discussed and voted on at a BUSINESS SERVICES MEETING this Wednesday April 9. The approved recommended sites then go to the full Board on April 22. This is it. There is no telling when Broadview will be granted a FI site if not they are not granted one NOW.

Projected enrolment for next September is already down 60 students (2 full classes).

Please tell everyone in the neighbourhood, or anyone associated with the neighbourhood-looks like time is running out.

We are meeting with trustee Jennifer McKenzie this weekend yet are WELL AWARE that we have stated our case backwards and forwards to her, the OCDSB staff and the trustees. We may attempt to submit another delegation (6 minutes to discuss the issue with Trustees at the nest Business Services Meeting). Broadview may not be granted permission to submit a delegation as MFI staff recommendations were sent out after the deadline to sign up as a delegation — but we will try. We will post here if people are needed at that meeting for support.

Many thanks,

Anne Donald, Kathy Russell and the French Immersion Sub-Committee of the Broadview School Council
